Starspangledbanner Filly Makes All For Curragh Triumph

Apprentice to Joseph O’Brien Basil Martini (Irish) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}–Under Offer {Ire}, by Bated Breath {GB}) was a four start girl who went into the G3 Weld Park S. at the Curragh on Sunday, trailing with black type and a first win of any kind Returned home after doing it all under Declan McDonogh in the heat of the seven furlong junior mares. The 12-1 chance had cashed in every game so far and continued after that stakes debut when he finished a close second at Punchestown earlier this month. Basil Martini, the sharpest of 10 in Stride, dictated at a solid pace well past the halfway point. She kept rowing to maintain her advantage as she approached the quarter mile mark, but refused to back down and was propelled out in the final furlong to hold the last pack by half a length in game fashion.

“She’s generally quick going and leading and it was a really tough performance,” O’Brien said. “Declan [McDonogh] said she felt really good today, she is a progressive filly and has kept her form very well the whole time. For the last stadium and a half I was wondering what would come and get her, but she just kept finding it. I would say that’s probably it for this season, she’s a group winner now and a nice filly to look forward to next spring.”

Pedigree Notes:

Basil Martini, who became the 15th breed scorer for her sire (by Choisir {Aus}), is the first of three foals by a daughter of Argentinian G2 Marcos Levalle victrix Bailonguera (Arg) (Southern Halo). She is half sister to a yearling filly by Footstepsinthesand (GB) and a weaned filly by Mehmas (Ireland). Bailonguera, related to G1 De Honor heroine Bonaventura (Arg) (Merce Cunningham), is the mother of three black performers led by listed Prix Petite Etoile winner Bayargal (Amber), and her offspring also include double group- 3-winner G1 Steward’s Cup runner-up Joyful Trinity (Ireland) (Zanzibari) and this year’s G3 Prix de Meautry hero Bouttemont (Ireland) (Acclamation {GB}). Bailonguera’s half-sister Baleares (Arg) (Senor Pete) is the dam of two-time Argentine Group 1 Champion Batallosa (Arg) (Southern Halo). Basil Martini’s Footstepsinthesand Half Sister is set to be sold as Lot 805 at this week’s Goffs Sportsman’s Sale.
