SiriusXM’s ‘Auto Trends’ Kicks Off New Season Talking Young Black Men and Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

*To kick off Auto trends with JeffCars.coma syndicated multicultural automotive program, season seven on the air, this week we are shifting from a focus on cars to an attention to a disease that is disproportionately affecting black men – prostate cancer.

According to the latest data, 1 in 6 black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, compared to 1 in 8 white men.

More importantly, this high-risk population is twice as likely to die from the disease compared to other groups.

Joining us this week is Dr. Reggie Tucker SeelyVice President of for Health and Justice and James Washburna young prostate cancer survivor and advocate to speak about the disease.

Tucker-Seely, who has held this newly created role since September 2021, has been hired to serve as the national prostate advocate for black men. During the call, he will discuss, no pun intended, his role and plans to serve black men’s health, using prostate cancer education as one of the tools.

And to wrap up the show, James Washburn, who was both diagnosed and cured of the disease before the age of 45, speaks publicly for the first time about his journey and how he never expected to find himself in unfamiliar territory — combating it from cancer.

Recommended screening age
It is recommended that Black males begin the screening process at age 40 to check their PSA levels. Because this is a silent disease, symptoms may or may not appear. Some of the most common symptoms can range from frequent urination to blood in the urine. Do a Google search to find free demonstrations near you.

Ironically, the median age for diagnosis of this disease is around 66 years. While Washburn, who’s not yet 50, doesn’t fit the typical profile when it comes to age, on the show the young prostate cancer survivor realizes he was a prime candidate for the disease after being asked a probing question.

What drives the disease
So far, while scientists are still trying to figure out what drives the disease, they believe that genetics (e.g., a family history), environmental factors, and lifestyle (e.g., diet and exercise) may be some of the key drivers.
