Even though breakfast is the ‘king meal’ of the day, people are turning to quick ready-to-eat and processed foods like cereal. Cereal and milk or just plain cereal and fruit are some of the easiest breakfast choices. Most families like to research different brands and flavors of cereal every morning. But is eating cereal every day really good or bad for you? Let’s talk a little bit about the benefits and side effects of cereal.

Cereal offers variety

What makes the cereal even more appealing are its varieties such as strawberries, mixed fruit, almonds and organic honey.

They are relatively low in fat, which may be one of the reasons for their success. But they also have sugars and added salts (sodium).

Driven by the popularity of cereal and growing doubts about its health benefits, Health Shots reached out to Delhi-based nutritionist Kavita Devgan to find out if daily consumption of cereal is good for health.

Nutritionist Kavita Devgan says that corn flakes have low nutritional values ​​and contain low fiber, therefore poor satiety. “People will be starving again soon. They’re also bad for the heart and general health,” she added.

The British Heart Foundation suggests that as a whole grain cereal, cereal when eaten alone is not a good choice for breakfast. Add a fruit to fill your first meal of the day.

The nutritionist underlined the following points about corn flakes:

1. Cereal is a refined food

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, there are many health risks when it comes to the consumption of heavily processed foods. Some may increase the risk of cancer. Heavily processed foods often contain unhealthy levels of added fat, sugar, and sodium that make food taste better, but too much of them can cause serious health problems. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure are some of the health problems.

2. Contains cereal additives

Food additives play an important role in improving the taste, color and odor of foods. According to the MDPI, they change the nutritional makeup of the food.

3. Cereal contains sugar

A professor of nutrition at the prestigious Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Dr. Frank Hu agrees that added sugar intake has effects such as higher blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease. All of them are linked to an “increased risk of heart attack and stroke.” Cereal also has a high glycemic index — almost 82 — which isn’t good for anyone battling diabetes.

4. High calories make up a significant portion of cereal

The International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity shared that consumption of high-calorie foods can cause weight gain.

5. Cereals often contain high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)

According to Plos One, there is evidence to suggest that increased fructose consumption, possibly via HFCS, can trigger metabolic dysregulation.
