Results of the Millennium Cross Country Meeting

DOBSON — The Millennium Charter Academy hosted three cross-country meetings at Fisher River Park during the first three weeks of September.

Coverage of the second MCA meeting, held on September 8, was included in the September 10 issue of The News. Although Millennium itself did not attend the second meeting, other local schools such as Mount Airy, Elkin, White Plains Christian School and Surry Homeschool did.

MCA Meeting #1

More than 220 high school students – 123 boys and 98 girls – competed at Fisher River Park on September 1 for the first Millennium Gathering of the year. Middle school races were also held.

The high school boys’ 5,000 meter event featured runners from 18 schools. Teams of at least five runners were eligible for the team competition, where point values were awarded based on their individual placings. The school with the lowest total score was the winner.

Only runners who were part of the team competition received points. As a result, point values do not always correspond to a runner’s result in the entire field.

Mount Airy had the best result of any local in the boys’ competition, finishing sixth out of 12 eligible teams with 167 points. Among Surry County schools, Elkin followed at number 8 with 195 points, followed by Millennium at number 10 with 240 points, and Surry Home Educators at number 11.

George Lawson of Forsyth Country Day won the boys’ race with a 5K time of 17:24.92. Elkins Connor Ball led all local competitors with a time of 18:37.57, good enough for 7th place out of 123 runners.
