Qualcomm paper identifies the benefits of C-V2X technology

According to a white paper published by semiconductor company Qualcomm, cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology has the potential to deliver transformative benefits in transportation safety, improve sustainability and create jobs in the United States.

The white paper entitled C-V2X: A new era of intelligent transportation in the United States describes the power of C-V2X and raises the issue that regulatory delays have hampered its adoption.

C-V2X enables vehicles to communicate with other vehicles, infrastructure and vulnerable road users – such as pedestrians and cyclists – without the involvement of a cellular network.

The implementation of C-V2X and wireless technologies in transportation will bring tremendous benefits to the public, such as: B. reducing traffic accidents and improving travel planning, mode of transport choice and traffic efficiency – all of which will inevitably lead to reduced fuel consumption.

Examples of these benefits include real-time route guidance to avoid traffic jams, adjusting vehicle dynamics for optimal speed with less braking and idling for better fuel economy, and personal mobility services for additional travel options.

Expected benefits of C-V2X also include:
1. Up to 10,000 avoided deaths per year,
2. Up to 800,000 injuries avoided per year,
3. Up to 2,800,000 fewer damaged vehicles per year and
4. Up to $12.6 billion ($18.7 billion) in savings per year from fewer damaged vehicles.

“When vehicles are connected to everything around them, drivers and infrastructure can communicate to make travel safer – reducing accidents, reducing congestion and lowering emissions,” said Jim Misener, senior director of product management at Qualcomm. “Due to the many societal benefits, automakers and the public sector are showing strong interest in deploying C-V2X.”

“C-V2X will create an estimated 120,000 US jobs through the development of new products, applications, services and intelligent infrastructure. These benefits will accrue to people of all economic sectors, geographies and skill levels, but cannot be realized until the FCC grants the pending waivers, which the automotive industry overwhelmingly supports,” said Kirti Gupta, vice president of technology and economic strategy at Qualcomm.

The whitepaper calls on the federal government to create a national C-V2X deployment plan and calls on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to approve exemption requests for the implementation of C-V2X in the 5.9 GHz band.

It notes that automakers, state departments of transportation, city planning organizations, and local authorities are striving to deploy connected vehicle technology, but have been stalled by regulatory obstacles.

Other countries are now investing more in this important technology.

“The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) provides a unique opportunity to modernize our nation’s infrastructure, with more than $1 trillion ($1.4 trillion) in federal funding for projects involving new and innovative technologies ‘ Gupta said. “State, state, and local governments need to think creatively about how to use these funds to implement C-V2X.”
