Mars Pet Nutrition Tests Bulk Sales Of Pet Food In Collaboration With Carrefour

Mars Pet Nutrition, a subsidiary of Mars Petcare, is joining Carrefour’s collective test-and-learn initiative at the Montesson hypermarket in France, offering a select range of pet food products in bulk.

As part of the initiative, shoppers will be able to purchase Perfect Fit dry cat food, Catisfactions and Whiskas care and rewards in bulk.

Mars noted that the partnership with Carrefour is part of a broader industry collaboration strategy under France’s National Plastic Packaging Agreement, where stakeholders are working together on innovative solutions to drive a circular economy.

Graeme Smith, director of sustainable packaging at Mars Petcare, said: “As part of our ‘Sustainable in One Generation Plan’ plan, we have identified a data-driven, science-based strategy to redesign and redesign our packaging in line with circular economy principles.

“As we work to improve our product packaging, we also pursue several progressive waste management partnerships through investments and industry collaboration.”

The move is also in line with Mars’ goal of making 100% of its packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Sustainable Packaging Options

Offering sustainable packaging options is a priority for Mars Petcare, with around 45% of pet owners opting for sustainable packaging and 60% looking for ways to reduce their use of plastic.

Shoppers are provided with reusable or disposable containers for consecutive pet food refills, along with easy access to product information via QR codes found on refill dispensers.

In addition to reduced packaging waste, bulk sales allow shoppers to purchase the exact amount of merchandise.

Deri Watkins, regional president of Mars Pet Nutrition Europe, said: “Packaging waste is a global problem and does not align with Mars’ vision of a planet where the planet is healthy. That’s why we continue to take action to support the circular economy. or a world where it is composted.
