Hollyoaks launches VR Experience as part of women’s safety campaign – Birkenhead News

Lime Pictures’ digital team launched an innovative 360° virtual reality in the metaverse to coincide with the mighty Hollyoaks ‘Long Walk Home Episode’.

It allows users to experience the sights and sounds of Hollyoaks character Maxine Minniver on her lonely journey back from a night out.

Set in Hollyoaks Village and featuring the voice of Nikki Sanderson, who plays Maxine in Hollyoaks, the interactive short film hears her inner narrative as she collapses on her way home after a night out.

The conceptual immersive experience was written by episode writer Jayshree Patel. It doesn’t contain an attack and Maxine gets home safely.

VR users hear sounds in different sets as Maxine makes her way to her home from The Loft nightclub.

The interactions she has with people along the way highlight the misogynistic and threatening experiences of many women, which instill fear and a need to avoid intimidating situations in many people’s everyday lives.

Jayshree said: “The VR experience is an exciting step for Hollyoaks. It allows us to reach a whole new audience who will be able to experience life through Maxine’s eyes. We hope people will recognize some of the thought processes that Maxine goes through and appreciate how the journey home can be full of second-guessing.”

Produced by Lime Digital in collaboration with ARK immersive to create an innovative 360° view of Hollyoaks village as we’ve never seen it before.

It can be found on platforms including Meta Quest in the VR for Good section, which uses the unique capabilities of VR to create human-centered stories that promote empathy and empowerment. It was also featured in Must-See Immersive Entertainment and can be watched without a VR headset on Facebook and YouTube.

The program also aims to highlight the differences between men and women in the film and television industry. The episode ‘The Long Walk Home’ was created by an all-female team, including a writer, director, cinematographers, engineers and crew. The film also seeks to promote more female talent in space.

Activist and content creator Danielle Lucy was a supporting artist in the VR film. She said, “Participating in The Long Walk Home was very important to me because I don’t think this topic is talked about seriously enough or not talked about seriously enough.

“I wanted to be able to share my own experiences as well as educate my followers, friends and family about the dangers women and girls face every day.

“I think Hollyoaks is such a respected show and the way they dealt with that and the way it was filmed; will make people of all generations and genders stop and listen.”

A spokesperson for Lime Digital said, “Hollyoaks is renowned for innovation and firsts, particularly in the digital space, so we were very excited to use this new technology to bring Hollyoaks village to life.

“However, the most exciting thing is the opportunity to use this technology in the most meaningful way to visually demonstrate how women feel on their long walks on the ground.

“We hope this experience will start important conversations for men and women and make users think differently about their interactions with others.”

Ark Immersive worked with Lime to manage the VR filming process, providing the insight and skills to elevate the immersive experience.

Matt Littler, founder of ARK Immersive, said: “This is a unique partnership with Lime Pictures and sets ARK Immersive apart as a new type of production house that creates not only high-quality non-fiction content, but also incredible stories based on works.

“For ARK Immersive, this project shows that there is room for immersive content in the film and television industry as our systems allow viewers to go deeper than ever before.”
