Elon Musk housecleaning at Twitter HQ finds #StayWoke t-shirts, pledges to ‘earn trust’

Elon Musk, continuing his Twitter review, said Tuesday that he ran into a closet full of “#StayWoke” T-shirts at the company’s headquarters.

In a Twitter post, Musk shared a video of a closet lined with “#StayWoke” T-shirts.

“Here we are in the market … and there’s a whole closet full of hashtag week T-shirts,” he says.

“A great closet,” says someone off camera.

Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey wore a “#StayWoke” T-shirt during an interview with journalist Peter Kafka for the ReCode Code conference in 2016.

When asked to explain his shirt, Dorsey said the meaning has evolved over time but “for me… it’s really about knowing, and staying informed, and continuing to ask questions.”

“Stay awake, and keep your eyes open to what’s happening in the world,” Dorsey said.

What he saw, he explained, were the differences in coverage of the 2014 Ferguson, Missouri, unrest versus the reality on the ground.

Musk himself is critical of the “awakening.” Earlier this year, he blasted Netflix as a “brain virus” that was making subscription streaming “unwatchable.”

In another instance, he teased his idea for a new game in a tweet called “Victopia … a battle for the moral high ground.”

Earlier Wednesday, Musk promised that Twitter would “over time” gain public trust “as we get closer to the truth.”
