Cross Country: The Minnewaska girls take first place – West Central Tribune


MELROSE — The Minnewaska girls earned the first place trophy in Tuesday’s Melrose Invitational at the Meadowlark Golf Course.

Minnewaska, ranked 10th in the state in Class A, finished with 39 points, beating second place finisher New London-Spicer by 47 points. Litchfield was third with 72 points.

Morris/Chokio Alberta junior Hailey Werk won the 5,000m in 20 minutes and 8.29 seconds. Lauren Ankeny of Minnewaska was second in 20:36.08 and Madison Wendlandt of Paynesville was third in 20:53.26.

In the boys, Sauk Center won with 55 points, followed by Pequot Lakes with 85 and New London-Spicer with 94.

Brandon Kampsen won the boys’ race in 16:14.68. Minnewaska’s Maeson Tank was fourth in 17:50.08. Kampsen takes second place in the state in Class A.

Murray County Central defeated the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd Invitational at Madison Golf Course.

For boys, MCC had 68 points ahead of Milbank, South Dakota with 77 points and Canby/Minneota with 78 points. LQPV/DB finished fourth with 95 points. Montevideo finished sixth with a 148.

Milbank’s Payton Brown took first place with a time of 17 minutes and 19.15 seconds.

In the girls race, MCC had 34 points, beating Milbank with 62 and Canby/Minneota with 63. LQPV/DB finished sixth with 126.

The girls’ champion was MCC’s Amanda Overgaauw, who clocked her time at 18:01.25. Ashley Overgaauw, her sister, was second in 19:20.72.
