Business Pulse – Investigating mysteries

Thanksgiving is fast approaching, which means we’re all at Southern Standard in our busiest time of the year to bring you the best countywide edition we can. For those who don’t know, Countywide is generally our biggest newspaper of the year. It’s full of local business Black Friday ads, all the news, sports and feature stories we can cram into it, and it goes out for free to as many people as we can reach across the country.

I hope everyone enjoys it and I hope everyone who hasn’t already taken part will take advantage of our biggest sale of the year during Black Friday weekend. A standard one-year subscription delivered to your home can be had for $78. That’s a $22 savings over our regular price.

In the midst of nationwide preparations, I still managed to squeeze in a little time to scour some business news this week, so let’s get to it.

The mystery is solved

I’ve been eyeing the former home of Randy Jean & Co. on Main Street for a while now and apparently I’m not alone. I have been asking about what goes on there for a few weeks and I am now able to tell you with certainty. Currently undergoing a major facelift, the building will soon be home to the Waterstones title. Originally known as First Title & Escrow, the company has been around for 21 years. Kelly Taylor will run the title company. Kelly has done a great job building relationships with builders and realtors in the past and hopes to carry that over to the new company. David Martala will provide legal counsel for the title company. The building is currently under construction but Kelly hopes to open in early January.

All real estate closings handled by Waterstone Title will be conducted out of the new office at 222 E. Main St. The building contains four offices as well as an enclosed area and accommodation. I was given a tour of the offices as work was underway and the smell of fresh construction was fresh in the air. It will definitely be a new look for those familiar with Randy Jean & Co. interiors but I’m happy to report that the beautiful brick walls remain.

The building offers a great central location in downtown McMinnville and ample parking in the front and back of the business and is another example of downtown revitalization since the Main Street renovation project. In what was once a veritable ghost town, no building remains vacant for long.

“The title business has grown significantly and I feel like we can offer our services to the community in a great location and a really great building,” Kelly said.

Hopefully I’ll be able to come back with the keys to open it up and give you a better look at the finished space but for now, I wanted to calm everyone’s curiosity and head into the mystery business.

The mystery remains

It’s one of the city’s mysteries solved but, as the city enjoys further proof of the business boom, there’s another long-dormant building showing signs of life.

The old eyesore that was once little more than an open block structure and a graffiti extract behind Begonias Restaurant has seen a lot of work lately. New doors were cut, old open holes were boarded up and the exterior got a white paint job.

I have a guess as to what is going on but I will stop speculating and let you know as soon as I am sure and am free to say.

What I can tell you for sure is that this project is overseen by Raven Young Designs Raven Young. Raven is a native of McMinnville and a graduate of UT Chattanooga with a degree in interior design. He manages Main Street Center, LLC, the former Freeleys building.

Along with her grandfather, Ken Roberts, she has brought several new businesses to the space, including Southern Traditions and Begonias, among others. Raven is a member of the McMinnville Historic Zoning Commission and is the director of Main Street McMinnville.

I haven’t had a look at the new location yet, but if Raven’s other work is any indication, I expect to see a beautiful area that was once a place only the brave would have worked. I am told to expect the building to come to life in early 2023.

IDB news

It took a little longer than expected, but the Industrial Development Board approved a motion Friday that brings the county one step closer to an incentive deal to facilitate massive development in Bridgestone.

A meeting Thursday to move forward with the previously agreed-upon incentive package was adjourned until Friday after board members and county commissioners reached an agreement. Expressed dismay at not being submitted to drafts and related exhibitions. vote

While some questions have been raised, Bridgestone officials have been repeatedly assured by board members and commissioners that doing a deal to pave the way for the planned development was what everyone wanted, but members voted no. Wanted more clarification on the full details of the contract before giving. .

After an opportunity to review the exhibits on Friday afternoon, the motion to approve the Bridgestone Pilot incentive package as presented passed with an 8-0 yes vote.

Charles Traeber, a member of Bridgestone’s legal team, told the board that a worldwide search was conducted by Bridgestone’s headquarters in Japan and Warren County emerged as the best location.

IDB Director Jenny Nafrada pointed out that the incentive package is not only to secure Bridgestone’s expansion locally, but also to ensure that the existing plant stays here. Passing the motion, Nafrada said, “This is a good thing for our country. We have to go through some mud to get to the end of the road, but we’re doing it and we’re going to the end. The road and it will be our “It’s great for the county and the surrounding area. I’m very grateful to Bridgestone. We’re really excited about it.”

The stimulus package will be put up for a vote by the County Commission on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
