Bulldogs Win Two Final Day of CIAA Round-Up


BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women’s volleyball team won Day 2 of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up 2-0, defeating Johnson C. Smith 3-1 and Winston-Salem State 3-2 in AC Jordan Arena.

The wins improved the Bulldogs’ overall record to 5-4 for the year and 2-2 in the CIAA.

Against the JCSU Golden Bulls, Bowie State earned a four-set win (26-24, 25-18, 16-25, and 25-17). Graduate senior Kendal Hoges (West Orange, NJ) had a match high of 13 kills as a junior Lindsey Grossman (Albany, OR) delivered 26 assists, 12 digs and 11 kills. Graduate senior Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, MD) recorded a team-high of 14 digs and seven kills as a junior Neysha Washington (Winchester, VA) registered 11 digs.

Statistically, Bowie State had an advantage over Johnson C. Smith in points (68-51), kills (47-37), aces (10-9), blocks (11-5), assists (43-33), and digs ( 60-55). The win would be the Bulldogs’ first conference win this season.

In game two and the last game of the recap, the Bulldogs and the Winston-Salem State Rams tied the first two sets, with the Rams winning the first set (25-18), but the BSU responded with a 25-20 win in the second set thanks to a batting average of .250.

The Bulldogs clinched a 25-21 set win in the third frame and appeared to win the match by four points, but WSSU stayed within reach as the set went to the end at 21-21. Two errors by the Bulldogs gave the Rams a 23-21 lead in ensuing possession — Bowie State scored on a Rams serve error, but back-to-back kills from Sanaa Lanier gave WSSU the set and leveled the match 2-2, forcing a fifth Sentence.

In the fifth stanza, Bowie State got eight points first thanks to three straight points with two kills from Grossman. The Rams were 8-0 due to an attacking error by BSU, but both teams would remain close by trading 3-0 runs. Despite a 13:9 lead in favor of the BSU, the WSSU came within one goal thanks to a kill by Lanier. After a sabbatical at Bowie State, sophomore Kyznia Jessup (Woodbridge, VA) bombed back-to-back kills in stellar fashion to give the Bulldogs the set and match win.

Grossman finished with 16 kills, a new season high of 31 assists and 10 digs, while Jessup had a career high with 15 kills on .333 hits. Ivey added 13 kills and 13 digs, while Washington accounted for 27 digs in the winning performance.

Bowie State returns to action Thursday, September 29 against Virginia Union at 6 p.m. at McKeldin High School.
