Andy Leveya professor at Tufts University School of Medicine who has practiced at Tufts Medical Center in the Department of Nephrology (kidney diseases) since 1979 and even donated a kidney for his wife Roberta there in 1999, knows Dr. Pereira since then immediately arrived in the US and became its research director.

Andrew Levey

“My mentors Jordan Cohen, John Harrington and Nicolaos Madias met Brian when they met Dr. Kirpal S. Churg (Brian’s mentor) in Chandigarh and were so impressed that they immediately offered Brian a position in my clinical research training program,” Prof Levey told INDIA New England News. “In hindsight, Brian didn’t need a manager. His exceptional intelligence, creativity, hard work and ambition resulted in him being successful in every aspect of our collaboration at Tufts.”

Prof. Levey recalled that he and Dr. Pereira were fortunate to initiate a project to transmit a hepatitis C virus through organ transplantation and Dr. Pereira became an international superstar in this field. At the same time, he worked with Charles Dinarello, already an accomplished scientist at Tufts in the field of inflammation, and applied these findings to observations of sick dialysis patients.

“Brian then developed an interest in the quality of care for patients with chronic kidney disease before the onset of renal failure and hypothesized that the poor outcomes he had observed in dialysis patients were due to suboptimal pre-dialysis care. He once again excelled and caught the attention of executives at the US National Kidney Foundation, who recruited him as President, where he energized and streamlined their entire organization,” said Prof. Levey. “At the same time, Tufts Medical Center leadership recognized Brian’s outstanding managerial skills and recruited him to a variety of roles, including CEO of one of the medical professions. It was a sad day for me but no surprise when Brian outgrew Tufts and left to start his own businesses related to kidney disease products which you all are well aware.”

dr Levey said he was grateful for Dr. Pereira’s contributions to kidney disease research and Tufts, for everything he taught him, and for the wonderful friendship their families shared.

“Congratulations, Brian, on this well-deserved honor,” said Prof. Levey.
