This year has brought us tons of new cookbooks full of fresh recipes to try. While some of the recipes featured in the new 2022 cookbooks are as nutritious as they are delicious, many other recipes in these texts are so surprisingly unhealthy that experts have questioned whether they are worth cooking. In fact, dietitians from the Committee of Physicians for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit of more than 17,000 physicians, recently reviewed some of Amazon’s most popular cookbooks. After careful scrutiny, this committee’s registered dietitians selected this year’s unhealthiest cookbook recipes and compiled them into a report titled. The Worst Recipes From Amazon’s Most Famous and Restaurant Cookbooks.
“Many of these cookbooks deliver not only the wrong message, but the opposite message, about what families should eat,” said Stephanie McBurnett, a dietitian on the Physicians’ Committee, in the report.
Many of these recipes are extremely high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and added sugar, all of which are known to contribute to heart disease and other serious illnesses. Additionally, this report notes that the Committee hopes to see more plant-based recipes, but instead sees massive amounts of meat and cheese from start to finish.

Garten, an expert chef at Food Network who has spent decades entertaining and educating audiences, has a new cookbook on the market. Go-To Dinners: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook. The goal of her new book is to make dinner a hassle-free, low-effort process for busy weeks. But the Physicians Committee is worried about the Overnight Mac and Cheese recipe.
According to the report, this mac & cheese recipe contains 1,800 calories and 88 grams of saturated fat. For perspective on why these numbers are alarming, the American Heart Association recommends about 13 grams of saturated fat per day for a heart-healthy diet.
America fell in love with Tieghan Gerard for Half Baked Harvest, the creative cooking and friendly food blog she started in 2012. Since then, Gerard has become a New York Times bestselling author and has been featured on Food Network, HGTV. and Cooking Channel.
Gerard’s third and final cookbook, Half Cooked Harvest Every Day, was highly anticipated by the fans and has already received 4.8 stars on Amazon. However, one of the book’s recipes, Spinach and Pesto Stuffed Pumpkin, is the one the Doctors Committee warned its readers about.
According to their report, although this recipe sounds healthy, it contains three different types of dairy and 22 grams of saturated fat. From recent research Journal of Clinical LipidologyDiets higher in saturated fat may contribute to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
If you haven’t been to Via Carota in New York City yet, it’s probably because you didn’t get a reservation. Located in Greenwich Village, this small Italian restaurant has nearly 85,000 followers on Instagram and is one of the best spots in town for its famous sights.
Needless to say, the restaurant’s cookbook created quite a stir after it was released on October 22. But despite its 4.4 rating on Amazon, there is a recipe in this book that most of the Physicians Committee doesn’t approve of. According to their report, Braciole al Latte, which literally means “milk chop” in Italian, in reference to pork fried in milk, contains one cup of lard and 1 1/2 cups of milk. This brings the nutritional value to more than 800 calories (72 grams of fat), comparable to an Army’s Ham & Swiss Melt, according to the report.
John Kanell’s background is unique, in fact, having spent more than a decade teaching math and science to middle school students. A few years ago, Kanell decided to combine her classroom experience with her love of food and the lessons she learned while cooking with her mother to start Preppy Kitchen. Kanell’s mother is Mexican and her father is Greek, so she says she grew up eating a combination of Mexican, Greek, American, and even French cuisine. Now it helps people feel safe and prepared in the kitchen.
While her book has rated 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon since its October debut, it includes a Black Bottom Cranberry Tart recipe that the Physicians Committee agrees is one of the unhealthiest recipes to come out this year. The report explains that while you can enjoy some fresh cranberries with this recipe, it still contains 14 tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup of heavy whipped cream, five egg yolks, and two eggs. A dietitian on the committee explained that he hoped he could change this recipe to be plant-based, but the heavy use of eggs and dairy made this difficult.

While this book can be a great source of inspiration for your holiday cooking ventures, the Physicians’ Committee warns that Babs’ Eggnog the Day Before is packed with extra calories and fat. Each drink has 543 calories and 43 grams of fat, according to the report. For a drink you can have two or three, that’s a high dose of calories from fat!
