What are platelets?

Platelets are very small blood cells that spread throughout your bone marrow. The role of these cells is to help the blood to clot when you are suffering from a wound. They prevent us from dying of blood loss in case of a wound.

A healthy person should have a platelet count greater than 100,000, but there are certain conditions or diseases such as dengue, anemia, cancer, etc. that can lead to a decrease in platelet count. A platelet count of less than 20,000 is considered dangerous.

2. Coconut Water

You may have noticed that dengue patients are prescribed coconut water by their doctors, and there’s a scientific reason for that. According to a 2019 study published in the National Library of Medicine, regular consumption of coconut water has positive effects on our red blood cells and hemoglobin. The study also showed a significant increase in blood platelets and fibrinogen levels with a reduction in bleeding time and an increase in clotting time from coconut water.

3. Papaya Leaf Extract

Using papaya leaf extract to increase platelet count is a very old home remedy that is also prescribed by health professionals. A study showing that papaya leaf extract increases blood platelet counts in dengue cases.

The study was conducted on 400 cases, half of which belonged to the control group and received a certain amount of papaya leaf extract in the form of tablets in addition to the normal dengue treatment. It was found that the cases in the control group suffered minor side effects and increased platelet counts while taking papaya medication. Also, they didn’t need blood transfusions.

4. Giloy

Giloy is a creeper and the sap extracted from its leaves is known to have many benefits. According to a 2010 study published in PubMed Central, Giloy, or Tinospora cordifolia, is good for blood purification and has beneficial effects on white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC) and hemoglobin, which keeps platelet counts in check.

5. Berries

Berries are a particularly rich source of polyphenols. They also contain other bioactive compounds such as vitamin C. A study published in the National Library of Medicine states that: Eating moderate amounts of berries resulted in beneficial changes in platelet function, HDL cholesterol, and blood pressure. The results suggest that regular consumption of berries may play a role in cardiovascular disease prevention.
