- Surgery using AR is as safe as traditional methods, but work still needs to be done to show it is just as effective and efficient, says Dr Witham.
- Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and AR to be addressed during groundbreaking discussions at the Summit
Dubai, United Arab Emirates: A number of leading experts, including the surgeon who performed the world’s first augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display spine surgery, Dr. Timothy Witham, will attend the Arab Health Future Health Summit, on February 2 at the Museum of the Future in Dubai.
Dr Witham, who is a professor of neurological surgery and orthopedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will lead a discussion on the opportunities and benefits that alternate reality will have for the healthcare industry, outlining the tools available to improve surgical safety and more. more effective, faster and more efficient.
“The definition of AR is when you take a computer generated image and overlay it onto your view of the real world. In AR, unlike virtual reality (VR), where you interact with a virtual world, we interact with the real world, but we have additional computer-generated images that are simultaneously used to project digital information into the existing environment,” said Dr. Witham.
“In 2020, we performed the first augmented reality spine surgery using a head-mounted display. This was achieved using an AR head-mounted device with a digital extension of the CT scan taken earlier. Finally, when we were operating and looking inside the patient, we had the CT scan right in our field of view.
“Since then I have performed over 150 surgeries with AR and I can say that it is at least as good as robotics and has made huge strides in minimizing the need for repeats.
surgery due to misplaced spinal implants. It could also be the first step towards making all operations using AR,” he added.
As part of the summit, discussion will focus on metaversion and the opportunities it has to impact healthcare by taking advantage of artificial intelligence (AI), VR and AR to improve patient outcomes.
“Thanks to new technologies in healthcare, preventive medicine will gain new meaning. Blood analysis will be more advanced to the point that it will outline your entire genetic makeup. Based on this, AI will predict, for example, the risk of cancer or spine problems. We will then be able to implement restorative or regenerative procedures to prevent this problem before it becomes a problem requiring treatment,” explained Dr. Witham.
With research from Market Research Future suggesting that the healthcare metaversion market could be worth more than $5.37 billion by 2030 and growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 48.3%, the Future Health Summit will provide invaluable insight on how everyone within the healthcare ecosystem in the industry can maximize the opportunities it provides.
The Future Health Summit takes place on Thursday 2 February 2023 at the Museum of the Future from 11pm to 2pm.
